FAQs – Retired Guest | Scientist Emeritus
- Q: Where can I go and when?
A: You will have access to the standard set of buildings (e.g. WH, IERC, FCC, UC) plus those approved by your supervisor. Your standard access is M-F 6a – 7p (CT), excluding holidays.
- Q: What things will I be allowed to do / not do?
A: You can do those activities appropriate for/conducted in office and control room areas related to knowledge transfer, collaboration, mentoring, advising, research analysis and discovery, and attending lectures, seminars, and staff discussions.
- Q: Do I get to keep my badge?
A: You will need to turn-in your employee badge, and you will be assigned a new badge with a new number. Your employee number will remain part of your record and will not be reassigned – it is unique to you.
- Q: How do I get my new badge?
A: You will need to schedule a badging appointment the day after your last day. CLICK HERE to schedule your appointment.
- Q: How does public and family members gain access to Fermilab?

Fermilab Badging
You will receive a badge appointment confirmation email at 6:00pm CST the night before your appointment. On the day of your appointment, you will need to go to the Fermilab Welcome and Access Center, located in Aspen East.
- Please make sure you bring the appropriate documents, including a REAL ID (or alternative docs) and proof of medical insurance (such as an insurance card). If you are a non-US citizen, you will also need to bring the visa documents listed on our documents page.
- Please also make sure that you have completed New Employee/New User Training, Sexual Harassment training, and Workplace Violence training. The training information can be found on our training website (click on the “training” tab). If you completed these as an employee and they are not expired, you do not need to re-take them.
Building Access (your building access is not the same as an Active employee)
- Q: How do I get additional building access on my ID?
A: If you need additional building access added to your new USER/Visitor ID badge, please have your supervisor email Card Access at CardAccess@fnal.gov
Retired Advisory Board
- Q: How do I signal my interest in participating in the retired advisory board?
A: Send an email to Scientist Emeritus at scientist_emeritus@fnal.gov
Keys
- Q: Can I keep my keys?
A: You will need to turn-in your keys on your last day. You can have your supervisor request new keys for those spaces you will retain access to pending authorizing approvals and completion of relevant training.
Training Materials with Login Services (no VPN/Yubikey required)
- Q: Do I need VPN/Yubikey to access training materials?
A: All trainings will only require your services password, no VPN/yubikey needed.
Scientist Emeritus Status
- Q: When will I know if I have been approved for Scientist Emeritus status?
A: Your manager or division Admin will send you an email confirming your status.
